Traceability within the dairy supply chain

Traceability within the dairy supply chain

All milk products are fully traceable from the supply chain to individual farms and through to the final customer.

Animal traceability is achieved through the ICT based EU approved Animal and Public Health Information System (APHIS) which monitors all cattle births and

movements. This is DAERA’s primary repository for information on farmers and farm stock. It plays a key role in the delivery of electronic services to the livestock and food industry and has been in place since 1997.

Traceability within the dairy supply chain in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and in Northern Ireland is in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 178/2002. In compliance with EU legislation, detailed records are maintained by milk processors of the amount and quality of milk produced on each farm. They also maintain detailed records of their product manufacture, including processing parameters, product test results, and stock records.

Through the detailed farm production records and product manufacturers’ traceability systems all milk products are fully traceable through the supply chain, both back along the supply chain to individual farms and through to the final customer.
